I decided I was finally switching from php to rails so I spent the better half of 2013 teaching myself ruby on rails and YES!! This was my perfect programming language which from then on I vowed to stick with.
I had taught myself quite alot about the ruby on rails(ROR) framework and I loved everything about it. It was time to put what I had learnt to the test. MovieBuddy was a fun project of mine that I did late 2013. Its a movie social networking site so to speak. Users can sign up/sign in, add movies they have watched to their collection, follow friends, see what movies their friends are adding, comment and or like their activities.
Users also have profiles where they can edit their info, change passwords and connect multiple accounts e.g connect their Facebook, Twitter and GooglePlus to all resolve to one account when they log in.
Some notable features and technologies include
- Login with facebook, twitter or google plus and also manual sign in/ sign up (All this are integrated with devise)
- Active Admin for administration
- Sidekiq for background processing
- Redis which powers sidekiq
This is my profile on moviebuddy
Also the site is mainly powered by the API from The Movie Database. This is where all info related to movies and tv shows is pulled from. With this I've use the RestClient & JSON gem to handle the api calls.
For the front-end I integrated a theme I bought from WrapBootstrap. Check it out at
